More than 20 artists showcase their art along the Marsaskala promenade. This event is organised in collaboration with the Rudy Buhler Art gallery, which is hosting other works by the artists. One of the highlights of this event is a large-scale mural by Malta Street Art Collective, especially commissioned by the Malta International Arts Festival.
Harbour Odyssey
A site-specific production, designed to take place on the front deck of a beautiful 38-metre long two-masted vessel. As the schooner cruises the waters, the audience joins the actors and musicians to experience a collection of historical anecdotes and local legends set within the panoramic views of Grand Harbour.
Chaotic Harmony
Chaotic Harmony is a musical journey through the repertoire of the modern flute, with flute virtuoso Massimo Mercelli, accompanied by string quintet. This project connects local artists with international talent, featuring musicians from the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. Chaotic Harmony also introduces an interdisciplinary dimension with choreographies by Moveo Dance Company.
Carolina Eyck – Theremin & Voice
Carolina Eyck is an internationally acclaimed performer of the distinctive “Theremin” – the only instrument in the world that is played without any physical contact. In her solo performance, Carolina's voice and theremin form the perfect symbiosis as she triggers live loops creating complex layers of sound.
Beethoven Forever
“Beethoven Forever” combines a full orchestra with digital animation and theatre on the stage of Teatru Manoel for an entertaining journey through all of Beethoven’s 9 symphonies. This family-friendly production has been curated to present a series of symphonic excerpts, accompanied by animations and illustrations that portray the narrative of each sequence. Featuring the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Michael Laus.
Stones & Bones
Stones and Bones is a stunning dance-theatre production from Greece featuring a narrative of human struggle through time and space, gravity and decay. The four female performers interact with large solid marble sculptures that portray a strong visual impact as well as a unique acoustic presence.
M.A.D.
Music And Dance
The third edition of M.A.D. Music and Dance presents a residency by dance artists Dmytro Gyrnov and Sarah Vella leading to three new choreographies set to a live performance of contemporary music: Spiegel im Spiegel by Arvo Pärt, Talking Drums: I. Ukom by Joshua Uzoigwe and Two Abstracts by Shaun Tilburg.
RITO
Rito by Spanish dance company Otra Danza combines choreography with an art installation to create a complex artistic production that merges the human body with sculpture, light and sound. This performance is introduced by a recital of String Quartet No. 8 by Dmitri Shostakovich performed by Boho4 from Belgium.
Sunrise Mass
A double bill programme featuring ŻfinMalta and KorMalta. The programme includes Krzysztof Penderecki’s striking string quartet no. 1 and Béla Bartók’s String Quartet No. 4 choreographed by Paolo Mangiola for ŻfinMalta. Both quartets are performed by Belgian string quartet “Boho4”. KorMalta will present Ola Gjeilo’s “Sunrise Mass” under the baton of choirmaster Riccardo Bianchi.
Les Nuits Barbares Ou Les Matins Du Monde
Hervé Koubi’s Cannes-based company of dancing acrobats present an enthralling performance that draws its gaze to the mixture of cultures and religions throughout the times to draw the foundations of a common geography. In a story about a path between France and Algeria, the barbarous nights of the world take root from this awe-inspiring story of the Mediterranean basin.

Workshops
Open Workshops
This workshop is an introduction to the qualities and ideas that we have developed over the last 15 years of our Fighting Monkey research. The workshop addresses dancers, movers, martial artists and people who are interested in human development. You will experience mainly “movement situations”, irregular training methods to provoke and increase the adaptive value of your behavioral traits and strategic planning.
Moving the Skin
Alertness, listening, contact and the availability of the body to any possible stimulus.
From skin to bone. Understand the body as a whole, as an ecosystem that houses infinite possibilities of movement. Explore personal sensations and imaginaries, from proprioception to projection in space. Inhabit the body and experience a sensitive and fully conscious body.
Contemporary Dance
Prepare the body, working on the alinement of the body to anchor the body in the ground and develop the peripheries. Guillaume Gabriel will lead the dancers through the vocabulary of the company Hervé Koubi and will focus on the subtle qualities of Hervé koubi’s work.

International highlights include Guilhem Desq’s hurdy gurdy performance, Thomas Bloch on the glass harmonica and percussionist Luís Bittencourt. The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Michael Laus, presents Beethoven’s 6th symphony, “Pastorale”, and Piano Concerto No. 2 by Dmitri Shostakovich featuring prominent Greek pianist Konstantinos Destounis. Local productions include Dik is-Siġra f'Nofs ta' Triq – a coproduction with Teatru Malta and two collaborations with Heritage Malta: ARTI – full immersion – a son et lumière installation of Maltese visual arts; and Garments of the Grand Masters which combines an exhibition of historical garments of the Knights of Malta with a live piano recital.
This year MIAF also launches its “fringe” programme with four new productions:
B’Riħ jew Riefnu – an itinerant theatre production inspired by Maltese rituals of death; MaltiEtnik – a music and dance pop up street performance in collaboration with Dance Beyond Borders; a fashion show / dance production by the MCAST Institute for the Creative Arts and Young Creatives in Motion featuring local dance schools.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
ANNABELLE STIVALA
Welcome to the 18th edition of the Malta International Arts Festival.
The MIAF has become a festival synonymous with diversity, showcasing a rich programme across several artistic spheres including dance, music, theatre and visual arts. Each year, the festival is artistically curated to appeal to different audience groups by taking a holistic artistic experience, featuring hand-picked local and international artists who guarantee performances of the highest calibre.
The Malta International Arts Festival is a unique festival in its own right as it revels in our country’s unique historical and geographical settings, with various site-specific productions. One such highlight is Underground Valletta, a water cistern under the bustling capital city of Valletta, which will provide a stunning visual and auditory experience for our audience – a must-see in this year’s programme in collaboration with Heritage Malta. In fact, like every year, we will have several collaborations with various Public Cultural Organisations to further enhance our accessibility as well as the overall experience of this festival.
I hope you enjoy this year’s programme which is a true testament of artistic diversity.
