FESTIVALS MALTA LAUNCHES THE 10th EDITION OF THE VALLETTA BAROQUE FESTIVAL

The festival is set to take place between the 14th and 29th January 2022.

Festivals Malta has launched the programme for the 10th edition of the Valletta Baroque Festival in January 2022. The prestigious festival will feature 36 diverse concerts celebrating music from the 17th and 18th century, spread over 18 venues, including the Manoel Theatre, Archaeology Museum, Verdala Palace, San Anton Palace and various churches and Cathedrals across Malta.

Minister José Herrera commented on the importance of the festival within the cultural sector, as it places Malta on the Baroque map on an international level. “The Valletta Baroque Festival is truly unique because through its prestige, it attracts a specific form of tourism characterised by tourists who are mainly interested in the festival but end up falling in love with the majesty of the locations and venues where the concerts are held. I am sure that this edition, which follows months of disruption caused by the pandemic, will provide a truly unique experience, an experience which will continue to reinforce the festival’s position as one of the top 10 Baroque festivals in Europe.”

The festival Artistic Director, Kenneth Zammit Tabona, said “Baroque music is part of our DNA – we are surrounded by baroque culture here in Malta. We are certainly excited for this year’s 10th edition, which will feature some of the best international artists and ensembles like Mahan Esfahani, Charlie Siem, Gabetta Consort with Franco Fagioli, Vasillis Varvaresos, Avi Avital, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and much more! We will also have various local artists including The Rock Troupers with a Baroque meets rock performance, The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and The Monteverdi Project directed by Marco Mencoboni, as well as the Valletta Baroque Ensemble and KorMalta in Handel’s iconic Messiah conducted by Christian Curnyn.”

Festivals Malta CEO Annabelle Stivala remarked on what it means to the agency to be entrusted with such a festival, including all its ancillary events. “We are honoured to have been trusted with the Valletta Baroque Festival. Apart from this festival, we are also spearheading the ABOS Project – which aims to create awareness on Italo-Maltese composer Girolamo Abos’ music. We are also proud to announce the Valletta Baroque Opera Festival happening in 2022 November as part of our already diverse cultural offer, with its main feature being an 1747 opera called Pelopida by Girolamo Abos,” concluded Annabelle Stivala.

The Valletta Baroque Festival is produced by Festivals Malta in collaboration with Teatru Manoel and Visit Malta, and will take place between the 14th and 29th January 2022.
