Commemorating the 50th Year Anniversary of Republic Day
Republic Day commemorates the day when Malta revised its constitution and effectively became a Republic. Consequently, Malta no longer had a foreign Head of State, as it ceased to be under the sovereignty of the British monarch, and instead appointed its first President of the Republic of Malta, Sir Anthony Mamo. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Republic Day, Festivals Malta through the National Festivities Committee, and in collaboration with the Office of the President will organise various activities to commemorate the day.
On Friday, 13 December, on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of Republic Day, a Pontifical Mass will be celebrated at St John's Co-Cathedral, Valletta at 9.00am.
Later on, at 10:45am, a ceremonial parade will be organised by the Armed Forces of Malta. Attending amongst others for this parade will be the country's highest authorities including President Myriam Spiteri Debono, and Prime Minister Robert Abela, together with other special guests. Festivals Malta invites the public to attend this ceremony in St George's Square, Valletta whereas this year the general public may accommodate themselves and watch the parade from the tiered seating set up in the square for this year's commemorative events.
