Għalhekk, Festivals Malta ħass li d-delettanti tal-Karnival jisħoqqilhom li jiċċelebraw din it-tradizzjoni kulturali hekk importanti għal pajjiżna kif suppost,” qalet is-Sinjura Stivala.

Press Release by the Ministry for the National Heritage, the Arts, and Local Government

Special edition of May Carnival launched.

Minister for the National Heritage, the Arts, and Local Government, Dr Owen Bonnici, launched a special edition of May Carnival, which is set to take place in the week between the 20th, the 21st, and the 22nd of May.

Minister Bonnici explained during a press conference held at the University Campus in Valletta: “Carnival is one of the most important pillars in the Maltese cultural calendar. During the last two years, the people at large could not enjoy Carnival due to the pandemic, but in the end, the Maltese and Gozitan people can once again enjoy this event that is so close to their hearts. "

Dr Bonnici thanked all the volunteers in preparing for this event. “Carnival brings together several different talents from all over the country,” Dr Bonnici said.

Earlier this year, an abridged version of Carnival was held. This included costume and photography exhibitions, a theatrical performance of the Qarċilla in collaboration with Spazju Kreattiv, and static street installations around Valletta and several villages around Malta.

This abridged program was specially designed so that Carnival could still be celebrated within the parameters imposed by the health authorities at that time.

Festivals Malta Chairman Mr Norman Hamilton said: “I know how much of their time carnival enthusiasts spend to produce beautiful work for public enjoyment. Carnival is not just a hobby, but it is a significant part of their lives. Festivals Malta felt compelled to honour this dedication through this special edition."

Festivals Malta CEO Ms Annabelle Stivala said that after the February edition, it was decided that activities that could not be held in the February edition would be presented in a special program in May so that all enthusiasts can enjoy the fruits of their labour. "Without the dedication of our community, Carnival would not be possible. Therefore, Festivals Malta felt that Carnival enthusiasts deserve to celebrate this cultural tradition as we know it properly.”

The Artistic Director, Jason Busuttil, explained that this edition includes a parade of street installations that were part of the competition in February, together with the King Carnival, grotesque masks, ‘il-Parata,’ and the dance competitions in St. George's Square, Valletta. The Children's Carnival will be held on Saturday morning. On Saturday and Sunday, a live rendition of il-Qarċilla, in its traditional format, penned by Ċikku l-Poplu, will be held in front of St. John’s Co-Cathedral, Valletta.

“The carnival program will also include carnival celebrations in various villages around Malta, a spontaneous Carnival in Ħal Għaxaq, and the famous Ballu Tritoni in collaboration with the Valletta Cultural Agency take place during the three days of Carnival in Tritoni Square, Valletta,” concluded Mr Busuttil.

Tickets for this special edition can purchased from the Festivals Malta website, www.festivals.mt/karnival, or from the Tourist Information Office located in Triton Square, Valletta.
