Biography

Graduated in Scenography and Costume from the Venice Academy of Fine Arts, Giovanna Fiorentini began her artistic career as a costume designer in 2002, creating costumes, in Italy and internationally, for different opera productions, such as La Teresina at Teatro Goldoni in Venice (directed by Francesco Bellotto), Aida for the Israeli Opera House in Tel Aviv, Macbeth and Attila for Vienna Opera House (directed by Paolo Trevisi), Nabucco at the Opéra de Nice (directed by Claire Servais), La Fanciulla del West (directed by Kirsten Harms) at Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago, La Cenerentola at Theater Erfurt (directed by Lynne Hockney). Her experiences in prose theater in the first years of her activity include Nina no 'far la stupida (directed by Damiano Michieletto) and L’Abate degli illusi (directed by Gabbris Ferrari). Since 2007 she has regularly collaborated with the Director Paul-Emile Fourny as costume designer for his opera productions: Andrea Chenier at Malaga National Opera; Manon Lescaut, Opéra de Nice and Puccini Festival of Torre del Lago; Lakmé, Theater Bonn, Metz and in Tours; Don Giovanni at the Savonlinna Opera Festival, Slovenian National Theater in Maribor and Malmö Opera; Puccini Triptych in Maribor, Tours, Metz, at the Ancient Theater of Taormina and at the Ópera de Oviedo; Manon Lescaut by Daniel Auber at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liège; Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci in Metz, Toulon and Jesi; Aida for Les Chorégies d’Orange and, again in Metz, La Traviata, La Vida Breve, Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Carmen, Rigoletto, Fidelio, Giovanna d’Arco (later revived in Modena), Mireille, Rusalka, also in Reims and soon in Massy; La Rondine, at Teatro di Pisa and in Jesi; the world premiere of the opera Voix d’Hebron/Voices from Hebron, by Cristian Carrara, in Metz and Modena. Directed by Sylvie Laligne, she designed the costumes for the Menotti diptych The Telephone and Amelia goes to the ball, on stage in Metz and Toulon. She designed the costumes for Madama Butterfly (directed by Giovanna Spinelli) and, directed by Leo Muscato, those for Il Xerse for the 48th Festival of Valle d’Itria in Martina Franca, La dodicesima notte, production of Teatro Stabile di Torino and soon, in August 2024, Cesare in Egitto, world première at the Alten Musik Festival in Innsbruck. From 2004 to 2023, she taught Costume Design Techniques at the Venice Academy of Fine Arts. Since 2015, she has held the Chair of Costume Design at the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts of Turin.
