O Għana, Minn hawn għal fejn?

By Adrian Camilleri

O Għana, Minn hawn għal fejn? by Adrian Camilleri is an opportunity to explore the history and significance of għana, a unique musical tradition in Malta. Through this short ethnographic film, viewers will gain insight into the experiences and perspectives of local għana practitioners, as they discuss the importance of preserving this cultural heritage for future generations.

With archival footage gleaned from the Magna Żmien archive, the film promises to take viewers on a journey through time, as musicians explore themes of everyday life that have inspired the music for centuries.

Following the screening, there will be a discussion about the future of għana and the life and works of Il-Bambinu, featuring invited guests such as the family of Mikiel Abela Il-Bambinu and folklorist and radio veteran Charles Coleiro.

Following the screening and discussion, join us for a screening of Imnarja, the Light Festival in Malta, a documentary filmed in 16mm at the traditional feast, Imnarja in 1976.  Published by CNRS Images in 1983, it is directed by Daniel Cavillon and based on Micheline Galley’s research on oral traditions in Malta.

The film documents various aspects of the Imnarja feast held annually in Buskett; from agrarian competitions to religious celebrations, and highlights the folk-singing tradition of għana spirtu pront (improvised chant). Mikiel Cutajar ‘Is-Superstar’ and the late Mikiel Abela ‘Il-Bambinu’ feature prominently in the documentary, as do some of the more renowned għannejja of the day.

This evening of documentary screenings offers a unique opportunity to learn more about Maltese culture and tradition, and to reflect on the value of preserving and celebrating these important aspects of our heritage.
